Whether you know it’s coming or it’s come as a surprise, the first question is always “What’s this going to cost?”
The cost of a new septic system can average between $12,000 – $45,000. A gravity system is the best and cheapest to install. Above grade systems; like an at-grade bed or elevated sand mound, are the most expensive. There are many factors that go into the cost of a septic system.
- Permitting Fees: This cost will vary on location. For example, Chester County Health Department (CCHD) permits and applications cost $2,000 for new construction and $1,200 for a replacement system. With CCHD that initial fee will cover the permits, testing, design approval and installation. If you jump over to Berks County, they subcontract private companies to cover townships separately. The SEO assigned to your township should be contacted for specific permitting fees.
- Testing: These costs will come from an induvial contractor. Chester County Septic, LLC starts testing at $1,650. Our base testing price includes, (2) test pits, (6) perc holes and (1) standard design. Some soil conditions require further testing and costs could be as high as $2,500 or more. In our experience about 7 out of 10 properties don’t exceed $1,650.
- System Type: The type of soil at your property determined after testing dictates the type of system to be installed. Sandy soils and more granular soils perc better. Clay and rock soil conditions typically have a slower perc rate and may require an above ground system.
- Septic Installation: Access to property and installation site will also help to determine costs. Conditions like steep slopes, tree clearing, patios/sidewalks and driveways are all considered when pricing for a new septic system.
